Time for 'winter magic' at McCall Winter Carnival
BOISE -- Away from the colder temperatures in the Treasure Valley and above the inversion, the
McCall Winter Carnival begins today.
Thousands are expected to make their way up Highway 55 for the 48th year of the popular event.
The weather this year for the Winter Carnival is actually perfect.
The theme is winter magic. And as you walk the streets of McCall, you'll
see that magic is everywhere.
"It always amazes me how they can do so many things," said Barbara Ambron.
The streets of McCall weren't that packed on the first day of this 10-day carnival.
"I think I enjoy the kids, like this one coming. They're always
amazed at the sculptures and I get a kick looking at them," said Bill
Ambron.
Locals, as well as tourists from across the state, are already converging for this winter tradition.
"All week she's been looking forward to the Cinderella Carriage, so
she dressed like Cinderella," said Sherry Scheline. "That's the great
thing about the Winter Carnival is, it's so magical."
"This is the first time that we've come up for the Winter Carnival. I
figured after 15 years it was time to try it out," said Pamela Clayton
of Boise.
We weren't sure if it was the chance to be on TV, or slide down an
ice sculpture that looked like a wizard, that had these boys excited.
"So far we love it," said Clayton.
Businesses love it, too.
"Winter Carnival is really a way for, number one, to have a little
fun in the winter, but it's also a great way to showcase our businesses
in town," said McKenzie Christensen.
Like the FoggLifter Cafe.
"It is awesome. It's great for business and we make a lot of drinks.
We have a line out the door," said Eva Harrower. "I love it. It's fun.
It's really fun.”
The hope is these sculptures not only bring people for the next week and a half, but for weekends in the future as well.
"It is magic, it's lovely," said Christensen.
Looking at these ice sculptures, it's magical just how they put them together. The McCall Winter Carnival runs until Feb. 3.
Highway 55 between Lake Street and First Street in McCall will be
closed to traffic for the Torchlight Parade Friday night. There will be a
detour from 6:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.
